LTE: Activate Default EPS Bearer Context Request

·          The purpose of the default bearer context activation procedure is to establish a default EPS bearer context between the UE and the EPC.
·           The default EPS bearer context activation procedure is initiated by the network as a response to the PDN CONNECTIVITY REQUEST message from the UE.
·          The default bearer is a non-Guaranteed Bit Rate (GBR) bearer. A dedicated bearer can be either a GBR or a non-GBR bearer.
·           The default bearer remains established throughout the lifetime of the PDN connection to provide the UE with IP connectivity to the PDN
·           The default bearer context activation procedure can be part of the Attach procedure, and if the attach procedure fails, the UE shall consider that the default bearer activation has implicitly failed
·           Once the UE is successfully attached, the UE can request the MME to set up connections to additional PDNs. For each additional connection, the MME will activate a separate default EPS bearer context
·           The MME shall initiate the default bearer context activation procedure by sending an ACTIVATE DEFAULT EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST message
·           When the default bearer is activated as part of the attach procedure, the MME shall send the ACTIVATE DEFAULT EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST message together with ATTACH ACCEPT
·           When the default bearer is activated as the response to a stand-alone PDN CONNECTIVITY REQUEST message apart from the attach procedure, the MME shall send the ACTIVATE DEFAULT EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST message alone, and start the timer T3485
·           The MME shall assign and include an EPS bearer identity in the ACTIVATE DEFAULT EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST message.
·           The MME shall retrieve the PTI (Procedure Transaction Identity) from the PDN CONNECTIVITY REQUEST message and include it in the ACTIVATE DEFAULT EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST message
·           Typical IEs in  ACTIVATE DEFAULT EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST message include EPS bearer identity, Procedure transaction identity (PTI), EPS QoS, Access point name (APN), PDN address, Negotiated QoS, Negotiated LLC SAPI, Packet flow Identifier, APN-AMBR (APN aggregate maximum bit rate), ESM cause, and Protocol configuration options etc…
·           The network shall include the IE ESM cause, if the network allocated a PDN address of a PDN type which is different from the PDN type requested by the UE

  1. Will this request be sent every time UE is powered ON?

  2. What is the difference between "Activate default EPS bearer context request" message and "DRB-ToAddMod" in RRC Connection reconfiguration message?
Both of them can be used to add a default bearer and contains eps-BearerIdentity.

    1. EPS bearer is setup at the EPS (NAS) level whereas DRB is required to be setup at RRC level which links to a particular EPS bearer.

RRC in the UE provide the user plane radio bearer context status to the ESM sublayer when a change in the user plane radio bearers is detected by the RRC including establishment and release of user plane radio bearers for the UE in connected mode.

DRB configuration in RRC handles establishment/re-establishment/release of PDCP, RLC and logical channel configuration etc...

    1. I am sorry... I asked
Can network trigger "Activate_Default_EPS_Bearer_Conext_Request" message without getting PDN Connectivity request from UE?

  4. Hi Kumar ,
From where MME gets contents/values which it includes in "ACTIVATE DEFAULT EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST" message and in "ACTIVATE DEDICATED EPS BEARER CONTEXT REQUEST" message?(like Qos , EPS ID , IP address , L-EBI,TFT etc)

  5. The initial bearer level QoS parameter values of the default bearer are assigned by the network, based on subscription data (in E-UTRAN the MME sets those initial values based on subscription data retrieved from HSS).

The MME shall not modify the bearer level QoS parameter values received on the S11 reference point during establishment or modification of a default or dedicated bearer. Instead, the MME shall only transparently forwards those values to the E-UTRAN.

  6. 40:(emm) No EPS bearer context activated

Could this cause the UE to loose the signal and report "no service" in the display??

    1. It depends on the implementation of the UI. But I think so too that it should be indicated as "no service" in the display.

  7. What the reason that the network send this message?

    No EPS bearer context activated
